Jokowi to fight protectionism under the guise of an environmental issue

TEMPO.CO, JakartaPresident Joko “JokowiWidodo said Indonesia would oppose all practices of trade protectionism under the guise of an environmental protection campaign by other countries or groups. According to him, each country must strengthen its ties to achieve global green development.

“We must avoid protectionism under the guise of environmental problems. Pro-environmental parameters must be clear and applied in a fair and transparent manner, ”the president said during a virtual speech at the Green Growth Partnership and Global Goals – P4G 2030 Summit broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel Monday May 31.

He mentioned the fundamental steps to ensure the achievement of green development globally, among others, the creation of an enabling environment that encourages synergy between investment and job creation with green development.

“Indonesia has implemented a low carbon development plan which is an integral part of the national medium term development plan. Indonesia also launched the Job Creation Law as a manifestation of Indonesia’s commitment to ensure that economic and social progress is not detrimental to the environment, ”Widodo added.

Another step, he continued, was to encourage innovation in supporting resource mobilization. The availability of financial support and technology transfer is key to the success of green development and carbon neutrality. Thus, he said, the country is open to investment and technology transfer.

“Indonesia is developing the largest green industrial zone in the world, north of Kalimantan, which has great potential in the development of renewable energies. Indonesia also has a vision to build a carbon market and will become the owner of the largest carbon stock in the world, ”said Jokowi.
